The woman here scares the young man so much the cannot find room enough for himself to find sensitivity for the woman. That’s I believe, the case in point in Eliot’s story.

Only v one difference - here the woman is lusting for tge young man  and not the opposite. So, not the man was in love with the woman. In this case the love was not equal, Threrefore, it had to end dismally.

I believe the lady desires more than a touch of friendship. Although age differences work for many couples, there has to be some common ground between the two for the relationship to make the long haul. Their age-defying chemistry is not one built on love but on lust, and is a one-sided emotional attachment that will inevitably end with somebody getting hurt.Â

I don't know this poem but your description tells me that it speaks to the hunger for meaningful connection and intimate understanding that is so often a theme of the older woman vs the callow selfishness of the young man.
He has not yet grown out of self-centered adolescence and is incapable of sensitivity to her loneliness.
She thinks to be seen by him with the sweetness of youth, programmed by her society to believe her own maturity is of no value in her world.Â

The young man is like most. Looking more towards attraction than friendship. Friendship is more important than lust. Not to mention that friendship is lasting. In the end, it may have been good that he resisted her advances. Matters of the heart can be painful. It is hard not to take it personally when someone you like rejects you. Not realizing that there are more fish in the sea.
