I'd opt for hardware cloth as a little chippy can get through chicken wire. Also, I'd bury the edge some inches down as chippies can burrow under it, too.

I would not have thought pepper plants were very tasty, although I do grow mine in pots and you do seem to have quite a variety of wildlife. Slugs and snails are our worst pests
Also the black aphids which the ants tend to farm. 🦋

Sherri, he's so little that I wouldn't believe he caused all the trouble, but you caught him in the act. I think the problem is that he likes peppers. It's going to be a long summer if he doesn't start listening. I hope you have a fun celebration today.
