I see your point of view, but when someone expresses their opinion, they are reflecting on their personal beliefs, values, and experiences. This can create conflict when others hold opposing views. Not everyone is up to a debate or an argument. The world is already filled with stress, so it is written as a safety net.

Good morning
Taps, this is a great post. I have to think about it for a while. I use the words "In my opinion " a lot. There are times when I need to soften my words. I can be very opinionated, and I really don't want to alienate people.

Yes, and if a person wanted an opinion, said person would ask for it. In that case one’s response would stand on its own merit and BE the opinion.
Unless said lightheartedly, which I have done, the phrase minimizes or diminishes others’ opinions in a sense.

Of course! There is never going to be a time when everybody agrees all the time everywhere. Just think how boring that would be. LOL. I just grew up in a family where the words "in my opinion" were never shared. I cannot even imagine my mom or dad using those particular words anywhere anytime and I don't think I ever used it with them or even with my hubby. It is good to use that phrase like when working on a committee to get something going or to improve a situation. There is a time and a place for everything.

I think 'in my opinion' lends itself to a concluding thought as opposed to in depth thought on a given subject. I agree with your thought as well.
