Ciel....
You make me want to re-read the book "Shogun". I read it so long ago. Also, your critter engagement with each other made me think of Aesop's Fables (which I loved growing up) and what an interesting man Aesop must have been.

Re: Sherri G,
I've heard a couple of hummers but have not seen any yet. Did you know only the males are audible?

Re: BearcatMike,
The first series was the one with Richard Chamberlain and Toshiro Mifune, in 1980. I really enjoyed the casting and the romance and that it was fairly close to the book. Both book and series were very much aimed towards a Western audience.
This new series was made with more emphasis on the Japanese perspective, focuses much less on the European/Western point of view and values. The actor Cosmo Jarvis who plays Blackthorne is nowhere near as appealing as Chamberlain, but is, I suspect, much more as the Japanese would have perceived him. I watched this one with appreciation for that. Hiroyuki Shanada plays Toranaga, and he is a pleasure to watch.
For the record, neither Toranaga is much like the historic Toranaga who was a short, big-bellied fellow. But then, SHOGUN is a novel drawn from history and not quite history itself.

Nice post to conjure up images in the mind - our feathered and furry friends in a challenge match. I hope they all win a bit.

We have a lot of beautiful birds in southern Maryland that squabble from time to time. I didn't know about the new Shogun series. I loved the movie. I enjoy period pieces. The directors seem to work hard to make the set and props as authentic as possible. And the acting in most cases is exceptional.

Happy Saturday! That scene you described is one you would find in my yard on any given day. I enjoy the sounds of the songbirds mingling with the little fur babies, which often includes disagreements at the buffet. Our first Hummingbird and Blue Jay showed up yesterday. Enjoy your day. We are headed to the park this afternoon for a birthday outing.
