My mother has talked about her childhood horrors involving some of the chickens her grandfather raised and killed when they needed substance for dinner. She still cringes when she thinks about him chopping their head off with the axe as she stood nearby. Farming and raising slaughter animals are not for the faint of heart.

Re: S G.
Yes, we always had a chuckle, thinking of the Mayor. Yes, early memories are always there. Sometimes one does not wish to remember them. That can be good or bad, I suppose. I could write of a very, very early one, but it might not be received favorably, American spelling, so it keeps redlining some words. 🌺🦋

Re: Pat
Like everything else, hens have to be vaccinated these days. I sometimes miss the cluck, cluck. 🌺

Re: SAm
I guess one has to become hardened to life, especially if one does not have a farming background. I never let my chicken go to a nearby experimental unit, although
I was always asked to do so. 🌺

Re: Kabu
Brown eggs are mostly sold here now, hens must run free range or in barns.🌺

Those memories on the farm stay with people for the rest of their lives.

Mother always had laying hens we called them. Beautiful big brown eggs and what we didn't eat, Mother took to the local grocer and sold them. We eventually learned that her eggs , and her sisters never made it to the customers. The people working there would fight over who's turn it was to get them.

I remember when I was 10 years old we were moving to Idaho. My brother and I had a chicken. Since we couldn't take them we were devastated when they were killed. It is a rough vmchildhood memory!

We raised chickens for the eggs, but some ended up in the frying pan. Young roosters don't lay eggs, and they make a lot of racket early in the morning.

I imagine things like that experience stay with a child for a long time. Things were different then but types of people remain the same in general, such as the mayor. 🌹😄
