DNA, I am learning works in peculiar ways. Back in time, people had little to no understanding that a child could be born favoring a brother, uncle, grandmother, or even a distant relative. They have made many shows on the subject that have opened people up to the mystery of DNA. It's a real shame that your grandfather was so mean and hateful to the woman who bore his child. As for surviving the odds, I should have died when I was nine years old. Modern medicine played a hand, but I never forget to thank God for saving my life.

Your father is to be admired. He was a survivor and refused to continue the patterns of dysfunction and abuse. He stood up to his father if I understood this right and became a man long before he should have had to do so. What a great guy!

A person can develop kindness even if he isn't shown any of it by his supposed role model. Sometimes just deciding not to be like someone is the ticket. Way to go!

Amazing really how one person in a family can change the rules. It does take a lot of courage.
