One could discover untold memories through stories I suppose. One learned of one's forebears and probably gave one a sense of belonging, besides other aspects of life.
Sadly I don't think it happens much today in our society , although I may be wrong.

There are stories abounding regarding the human experience for centuries. I was just perusing classic books on Barnes and Noble and daydreaming how wonderful it would be to have a book of my poetry on the shelves for centuries. Such a pleasant daydream.

I enjoy hearing a good story. How lucky you are to have been read to when you were a child. I believe it is a great start for a kid to get interested in books.
