We always thought that Bramley Seedlings were the ones to roast in their jackets.

We have one old tree and I always save the largest to bake with sultanas after removing the core. Our ground has literally been covered with Apples this year we cannot store or give away enough. Actually we are still on restricted water use although I can see we must have had four inches recently I suspect that the ground was so dry it soaked so much before run off.

I saw that come September 30th, the government will no longer issue social security checks, relying instead of payments to be directly deposited. That is going to have an adverse effect on the homeless.

The world is full of contradictions. You are right; you can't help people who refuse help, unfortunately, but you can assist those who want it. The problem lies in our society. They would rather build prisons than shelters. Prisons make money. Many of us don't understand what it is like to be homeless. Or we don't care.  The baked apples sound delicious.  Peace.

I had a friend a long time ago who sabotaged every attempt to get him a home. It came down to his determination to not take on responsibility for, well, anything he could avoid or evade. We usually end up with what we want most: In his case it was freedom from responsibility or accountability.

We have several homeless camps in and around Pittsburgh. We have helped homeless people by giving them food, money, and clothing. We have even offered a ride to a shelter. I have found that most do not wish to be taken to a structured environment. I believe they could get showered and dressed in fresh clothes at a shelter, along with receiving help, but you cannot help someone who refuses to do things they don't wish to do. Not everything is as it appears, though. Some homeless people are not really homeless. They post GoFundMe's on their Facebooks, collect money all day, eat at restaurants like Panera Bread, and then go home to a house that is anything but where a homeless person would dwell. This has been discovered by people in our area who follow the homeless people at the end of the day. Not everything is as it seems.

Seems to me if our government officials were really public servants, they'd be setting up facilities - maybe tiny houses - for folks who find themselves homeless after years of working and paying taxes, etc... It would be better for all concerned if such shelter was on the administration's agenda.
