Re: MermaidJeanie

Thank you.

There's a reason I post these. First, I was a paramedic (one of the very first in America back in 1972!) for 12 years, and then an ER RN for another 29 years. I would see more grief expressed than I ever wanted to see. Most people never encounter death on a steady basis, but the ER sees it every day. You never get used to it, but you learn to keep going forward despite it.

In college, I had the honor of meeting Elisabeth Kubler-Ross, author of the book "On Death and Dying," when she gave a lecture at my college in ~1971. I was fascinated with her and her book.

Until the late 1950s, people died at home. Now, they die in a sterile hospital room, away from the family's eyes. Children don't see it, and they grow up fearing death. Death is the natural conclusion of life.

By posting these quotes and a few sentences to expound on them, I hope to allow people to see that it is all right to grieve. I have written a book on grief that is specifically written for someone in the grieving process. It's not full of long paragraphs, but rather short sentences that realize those deep in grief aren't able to hold lengthy conversations. Currently, it is only available in hardcover format, but I am working to make it available in other formats this month.

Respectfully,
V
