I know you had some brilliant parents. Looking back on my college prep in the mid-70s, I had no idea that you could study for the SATs. I did well enough to get into college on the first try. However, my counselors recommended that I retake it to get better scores. Which would make me eligible for scholarships. And allow me to be accepted at more universities. I identify with taking time off for the summer. You do need a chance to remove the stress.

It seems a shame to be asked to give up your summer time, especially when you had planned to work with Dad. The whole idea to me is to give youngsters a chance to be carefree, play, and goof around.
