I did a lot of exercise during my middle years, mainly because I was an RN

and run off my feet most days. I was very thin back then. When retired I stayed thin for many years. have a little belly now-a-days and don't really mind.

Keeping yourself in shape in your midlife is a positive investment in being healthy in your 80s. Never said it was easy or convenient, but it's definitely smart. Peace.
