Michael.....

.....Four of my  many grandchildren have ancestors on their mother's side of the family who  were slaves.   In fact, their mother was the very first person to become a member of a certain large all-white Baptist Church.  It was not easy for her because some of the people there were not ready for that change.

it is a time to be really proud if anyone has slave ancestry. What those people suffered to survive the voyage to their destination. let alone once they arrived and on through generations. tears come to  my eyes just thinking about it. Australia has a sticken past too not very often talked about. People from Islands close to Australia were captured and brought to Australia to cut sugar cane in the sub tropic coastal areas of Queensland. The cane was first burned to chase away dangerous snakes and then the people were sent in with knives to slash the cane down in the heat. it was cruel work.

Happy Juneteenth. I enjoy reading and learning about history. I can't begin to imagine a world without books. The end of slavery is one of history's most significant events. No human being should ever be someone's property. President Lincoln was a leader who was ahead of his time, and thank goodness for his vision of a very different nation.

I agree with you completely about human rights and education. Ignorance is a tool of bullies.
