Considering their speed and lack of cushioned seats, I imagine it would be a long and rough ride.

Re: Kabu
I was 31 then and farmed 3000 laying hens. It is away of life a man said. Anyway he started a well paying job emptying Cess pits a luxury compared to the buckets. I did not really like it when the poor chap visited me. I don't know if it was the reason but he died years ago.🌺🌺

Re: Ciel
Of course in those days Winters were so much harsher than they are now.
In those days with not much heating and poor insulation our Bungalow was just a
one brick thickness. My dad caught pneumonia three times when we were children.
I used to love standing holding my vest over the little oil stove early in the morning.

Re: Pat
Yes times were hard my feet were always cold in Winter. Boots rotted in Winter after being soaked in paraffin. I could tell of sad times, but we all have those. Thank you.🌺🌺

I remember we won a hat box full of goodies once . My Mother took out a bar of chocolate.
She broke it into three pieces and said, 'your Dad will have to sell the rest, we need the money. 🌺🌺

Now that is what real life is like for so many of us. (Elon Musk is a fairy tale). We normal people have to work for a living....and work...and work...and be thankful that we can work.

Children grew up fast in those days. They learned work and worry early and knew about the money struggles of the family. An easy time of it would have seemed more fun, but you grew up to be a fine person, with a wonderful way with words. Blessings in disguise.

Your writing is so evocative, I can see the glow of the light indoors, and the lanterns on the wagon. I can feel the cold and the wish to be home!

Times were tough in the Old dart much longer than in Australia. ...and we lived on a farm. My first trip to England was in 1962 and St Paul's of course was OK but all around her were great craters from the bombs; Life was still tough in the Old Dart!
