Oh, I learned this when I was 40 and living in a small country city in Australia. My husband was very prominent in the town and so everyone seemed to know us. he also made people choose sides. As I walked down the street some folks yelled slut etc. from their cars and coming face to face with me I could read their faces telling me not to make this awkward! So crying inside, I would act calm but I knew I had to leave. This place wasn't big enough for him and me!
