I 'knew' this bear from meeting her so often. She had to have known I was there, yet she came within "spitting distance" of us. The only creatures I ever worried about meeting too 'up close and personal' were moose. A moose would stomp you to death "just 'cause." Every year I lied in the UP, there would be at least one violent stomping of someone too dumb to keep their distance from moose.
