When I was very young I bought a Dictionary £5, 200 sixpenny lardy cakes.
My ambition was to read it through. It was the Shorter Oxford. I don't know
what the original one was. I forget how far I got.
I have just opened it at random. Buffin i.e. A coarse cloth Elizabeths time.
A bufflehead i.e a block head. A buff-coat i.e. a coat of stout leather.
Two thousand and some pages/ 🦋 .

I remember some of those sayings you mentioned. Heard them from my grandma Lucy and the aunties when I was a child. The golly wobbles for one. Their grandparents emigrated to the colonies from England to become homesteaders on the frontier, maybe 150-200 years ago. It's a good thing to keep those sayings and words alive in the language.
