Maybe Ewan had a very low self-esteem, and behaving as he did in class made him feel better. I do feel that the teacher should have taken the time to talk to him as it may have helped Ewan and made their teacher-student interaction better.

How much better to have had a private talk with the pupil and sort out what the real problem was.

Good morning
It's a real shame that Mr. Spicer didn't get that Ewan more than likely had self-esteem issues that are often covered up by making jokes. My other guess is that he didn't have a great home life.
