Something like that happened in my Oklahoma Grandma's extended family. When the little one's Grandma-mother died suddenly, her sister-in-law (my grandma) adopted him and raised him. His real birth-mother had run off to California when the baby was born and never went back home. If the truth were known, it has probably happened in many families.
