My poor Mom had to put up with seven kids raiding the kitchen and one of them a boy with a hollow leg. She learned to make do with what she had and make up her own recipes according to what we had not been into. It was very hard for her to keep Mayo and crackers around as that was our last resort for raiding.

I feel so sad for you and your Mother through these really tough times.She was tough but her nerves must have been raw trying to make ends meet/ Kids can't understand that and nor should they have to. At least it was a time when money was short for everyone and no one expected huge amounts of treats. Now if she always left that chocolate in the same place then she must have known it was a time you 3 had a treat.
