They move slow in cold weather. We would use fly swatters when they invaded the back porch in the cold.

I had a problem with them building a nest on my gallery. A friend told me to buy yellow, plastic fake hive from the dollar store, put honey and water in it, and hang it near their hive. It worked!! They fly in and can't get back out, and within days there were no more wasps hanging around at all. I hang it outside the beginning of each spring, and it still keeps them away.

Re:
Very interesting. I will be trying that when I find me a spray bottle that doesn't already have something in it.

Charlie did battle with the wasps and found a most effective and non-poisonous solution. In fact, a solution of dish soap in water. Sprayed on the wasp, it destroys the surface tension that protects the wasp from rain and such, and it is instantly downed and drowned by the water.

Yuk, I do not like wasps no not at all. I had a big nest in my garden shed in Canada and we waited till winter when they had all gone to sleep. We had a fire in a drum and picked that nest off the wall and threw it into the fire. Naturally we were very well covered for those few who buzzed around were furious.

Re: I saw something online recently - a fake wasp nest someone crocheted.
Interesting. I've never heard of such a thing.

I make nests out of a smallish plastic net stuffed with grass or straw and hang to
trees or anywhere in fact. does seem to keep our smaller' 'I guess' Queen wasps
away. As Pat mentioned the Queens do not like to build near another nest.

According to that item, a wasp won't build near an existing nest, and believes in the fake because of its color and shape. Not sure where I saw this, but Google may be able to help. Such a decoy would probably sell well at the Home Depot, etc.

Good morning
Wasps and hornets are the worst of the bees. Their sting feels like a cigarette burn. Not all bees are bad, but these guys really need to get somewhere.
