Made me shudder, I realize how dangerous it was to try to tame some of the horses.

The rodeo tryout on which this is based happened in 1946, I was 11 years
old. Mom did some occasional reporting for our local paper and covered this event. It took place in rural Kennewick, WA (the southeastern side of the Cascade range) old west country, horse & cattle ranches, wheat ranches. There was open range a couple miles north of us known as the Horse Heaven Hills. Pendleton, Oregon was then and still is a major rodeo, and many preliminary events for which wild horses were brought in were held all over the region in those days.
