A dear and loving Father you had Taps. I guess when he was alone he worked out where hecould find the money...pay a little less off such and such a Bill so his little girl could have what she needed.

Yes. My grandfather was a coal miner during those years and my Dad was caught up in the Depression. We don't know when we are well off how bad things can be in so many places.

I don't think folk realize how short money was in those days. Even here just after the first war. Men would line up at gates hoping the farmer would give them a days pay
hay-making.
