Somehow we Kids always liked to get one over on Dad. One was when a Indianan
hawker was trying to sell at the door and because he would not buy called him a
Nasty Gypsy man. Dad nearly exploded and the hawker shouted out 'No you nice
man.' We kids never forgot it as he had told us he had once been made a blood
brother to a gypsy. Mother never mentioned black knickers.

I like your dad, from just this little anecdote. He sounds like
salt-of-the-earth and a husband who liked his wife - IMHO it doesn't get much better than that.
