I bet you were so happy whenever old George appeared to chase them away.

I guess you had to show your tough side early in life. Well I know you have another one as well.

Your mom did her best in the worst of circumstances. Kudos to her. Times sound like they were rough and look how far you've come! Bullies and mean kids can really traumatize other children. I'm sorry you had to experience that.

Re: Re: Goldiec
Pat, I think your Mom was such a good home maker. She had the rugs near the beds to keep you warm when you got out of bed. I know your oil heater kept everyone toasty warm on cold mornings. My grandparents heated with a big old coal burner and the farmhouse was always toasty warm. My grandma was always the one to shovel the coal and I can still remember the red hot coals when she would open the door. It used to scare me. I was young and didn't know how fortunate we were to have coal to heat the farm.

Enjoying these posts, and it's bringing back so many memories of growing up on the farm.

That big old stove that also heated wate was a life saver. I know cos our house, until the Rural electric power came through, we huddled around it for warmth, cooked all the meals on it and heated the water for our needs.

Re: Goldiec
My sis and I shared one bed, Mom had the other in the bedroom. Bro Jim slept on the couch in the living room. Yes, we spent winters there. The wind blew under the foundation beams and turned the floor into what felt like a sheet of ice, but mom had thick rag rugs next to the beds to catch our feet before we wiggled our toes into our slippers. We huddled next to the oil heater to get dressed.

Good Morning
Pat, I've always wondered why some kids want to be bullies and hurt others. Thank goodness for your neighbor George when he came to your rescue. My grandparents had an outhouse on the farm and I was always afraid there were snakes in there. We lived up in the mountains and there were rattlesnakes everywhere. There was an opening under the farmhouse and my family would always warn me and my cousins not to go near it because of snakes. When I was reading your description of the house you lived in I was thinking thank goodness you had a place to call home. Did everyone sleep in the same room? Did you spend winters in this house?
