It was scary the way that hurricane kept changing its course.

Re:

C_C_T, I think it's wonderful that your government gives you money to help with gas prices.

Re:

FSI, I was thinking it might be because of the hurricane.

We are getting money from the Government to help with fuel prices. Trouble is everyone gets it,even those who can afford everything.

I believe the hurricane causing gas prics to go up. Hopefully, they go down quickly.

Goldiec.  Please hit your edit button and delete the Ma Bell thing from your comments.  So sorry about that.  I guess I got to thinking about that shopping list and the price jumps we're seeing... and oops!

CUSTOMER SERVICE AT MA BELL

1956

I got a job at the local office of Illinois Bell Telephone Co. in Wood River, IL using
my previous experience at Pacific Telephone in Seattle as an extra qualifier. It was
a shoo-in, and they were happy to hire me.

Like the other “girls” in the office I was trained to handle various tasks. In addition
to working the teller’s desk and accepting payments from walk-in customers, we
all handled requests for service over the phone and were urged to push Ma Bell’s
products; one I remember was the new Princess phone, available in pastel colors
(especially pink). I also handled order writing, using a TWX (teletype machine) to
send service orders by wire to the warehouse across town where installers and
others worked.

The senior service representative in our office was Miss Kathryn Troyan, a single
lady in her early sixties. She had tightly permed white hair, wore dark blue dresses
with ruffled little Peter Pan collars, and staid black oxford shoes. She very much
reminded me of my grandmother, Lucy Amanda. But over the phone her voice was
high-pitched and girly, with a tendency to giggle. It was her way of turning on the
charm with customers.

One day as I worked the front desk, I heard Miss Troyan say something surprising:
“Oh, no, that wouldn’t be proper.” And then she giggled. Her voice always carried,
but this time it was even more chirpy than normal. A minute later she hung up,
jumped up from her chair and hurried to the water cooler. I wondered why she was
so flustered.

Half an hour later a young man came through the front door with a bouquet of
flowers and came grinning up to my counter. He asked if Miss Troyan was there. I
said yes, and pointed to where she sat, talking on the phone, taking notes, totally
absorbed in her work. He turned to look. His mouth dropped open.

“That’s Miss Troyan?” he asked, incredulously. I nodded.

“Here,” he said, and handed the flowers to me. “I thought she was … someone
else.” He practically ran out the door. I took the flowers back to her. “A young man
left these for you, Kathryn,” I said.

“Oh, dear. I think he may have made a mistake,” she said. But she smiled happily
and set the florist’s vase next to the rolodex on her desk.

Re:

Taps, thanks for the idea!  I'm going to get sweet potatoes this week.  We are all fans of sweet potatoes with butter on them.  It's very expensive to go to the grocery store.

Re: Good morning

Sherri, I'm surprised at how high potatoes are right now.  We do love baked potatoes so hopefully, we find a good deal.  The salad sounds really good.  I know John is really going to enjoy his pot roast today.  I hope you have a good day!  Stay warm!

I baked a sweet potato yesterday.  First one in a long time.   It was really good just with some butter on it.   It really costs a fortune to eat out these days.  Seems like eating out has nearly doubled in cost.

Good morning

Baked potatoes sound really good. I purchased a ten-pound bag of potatoes yesterday. Food costs are high right now. Those potatoes cost me $5.99 versus $2.59 from just a year ago. Thank you for the idea. I have sour cream and butter. It's chilly here today too. I packed John the remaining pot roast in his lunch today. I am planning on making something lighter today like a salad. Your mention of laundry detergent reminded me that I need to throw in a load of clothes. Have a good day. Stay warm!
