Maybe a Kindle would be a good thing to have for such occasions? They have a background light, and one can increase the size of writing to whatever is comfortable, and their charge lasts a long time!

Re: Good morning
Actually, since I have and electric stove, when the power went out, it stopped cooking, so it didn't start heating again until the power came back on, so when I smelled it, it was just right for eating. Things worked out all right except I did not go back to bed for hours and hours.

I hate when power outages happen. What makes them bad, too, is the not knowing when things will come back on.

Good morning
That is a scary situation. My guess is that the toast was a bit overdone, but thankfully, you were safe as you survived to tell us about it. I had a similar situation happen after I put some eggs in simmering water to make hard-boiled eggs for my potato salad. I totally forgot about them as I was watching some t.v. program. The strange smell coming from the kitchen is what got my attention. The water had evaporated and the eggs were ruined. Luckily, my pot was still in good shape and I didn't burn the house down.

I hope the sandwich situation worked in your favor--nice and toasty, and not burnt to a charcoal briquette!
