There were times when my dad couldn't change the oil in his car without help!

Re: Sea Gypsy,
Yes, I had one then... but not again until I was in high school. Then my dad put together one from a kit--he liked doing that sort of thing!

Re: Sherry G,
My first record player was a kiddy one, but it played real records. I remember listening to My Grandfather's Clock quite a lot. I can still sing it from memory! A couple of years ago I heard a report on NPR about the true story behind the song!

Re: Goldiec,
My family didn't go in for country other than folk songs. My sister liked it, though.

Re: Pat,
I remember liking Perry Como, but partly because of Disney's nature film about Peri the Squirrel. I would have been 4 or 5-ish.

Re: CCT,
I wasn't around when the war songs were playing, but I did hear that one Marlene Dietrich did-- I think both sides listened to it: Lili Marlene

I did get a record player for my 5th birthday. We listened to all types of music at our house, everything from opera to C & W, often concurrently so it sounded really weird there in our house at times. I had one record with military songs. My Dad would actually sing along with them but it was my mom who usually sang. I also had a record that taught about rhythm and beat, and how to listen to it in everyday sounds. It was great.

Good morning
I did have a record player that I bought when I was sixteen. MTV was the newest thing on television, so it was my inspiration to purchase some vinyl records. I used my meager paychecks that I had saved up to purchase it from Montgomery Wards. I grew up with a stepdad who played guitar and violin in a country band on Saturday nights. They also watched Lawrence Welk, so I enjoyed a mix of big bands, oldies, country, and rock.

We had such a variety of music and I recognized many that you listed. Mom and Dad loved music as did my Grandma and Grandpa, that something was always playing. Dad, ever the teacher, would play music and have us listen closely and name the instruments playing that we could pick out. Mom taught me to sing Czech songs and Dad loved marches and grand ole Op'ry, Johnny Cash etc. Before we had records we listened to music on the old Philco radio.

Friday nights on the radio came "Your Hit Parade" the network
orchestra with male & female vocalists doing covers of the top ten songs of the week. Mostly ballads in those days - the top singers were crooners like Bing Crosby and Perry Como, and torch singers like Peggy Lee. Doris Day was popular, too.
