I can hear how much Ribcage loved the Service by the tone of his letters. How wonderful that he was able to serve our country. I'm sure he made a fine recruit snd serviceman. we need people like him, as well as those who choose other walks of life.

Re:

The US stopped drafting in 1973.  Ribcage was only 13 at that time.  My other three sons never showed interest in signing up, but Grandson Peter did four years in the Marines, and Grandson Michael did five years in the Army, and Grandson Dalton has done six or seven years of a career committment in the Army.

I hate and loath war but I really admire those that serve their country both in troubled and in peace time. I am grateful my sons were too young and then too old to see war up front.

Taps it is great to follow Ribcage's service details. I knew he was in the forces but I did not know that he had volunteered. Lovely to have kept the letters. I hope it does not make you feel sad .

Re: Too bad they don't give honor flags to parents who are brave enough

Mark was always interested in the Navy because his Dad had been a Navy man.

to support their children's decision to go into the military, particularly in times of war. Although we may think we're on our own, there's always someone behind us, someone who showed us the path before we took our first steps.

Good afternoon

Uncontrolled liberty was the highlight at the end of boot camp, and of course they earned it after all of that physical training.

Good Morning

I think your son really tried to make the most of it while he was in the Navy.  I know it can be hard but so rewarding when you get to the end of your training and go on to your assigned duty station.  Did he get to pick where he was going?
