This is my take on it. I don't think those sayings refer to those without the basic necessities. I think they refer more to those who are never satisfied. They feel the need to keep up with the Joneses and whatever they have is just not enough as long as someone else has more.

That's exactly it, Goldiec. The only ones who can help are often those

who won't.

Good Morning

I have to say people that have loving families have more than a lot of people have.  So many people are estranged from their families because of drugs or by choice and they have nobody to lean on in times of crisis.  It is such a sad state of affairs.  This is sad for everyone because the people that are living on the streets fall into despair and I do not believe the cities do enough to help them.  I think people that have adequate means can never relate to what the people on the street go through in a week.  I think wealthier people believe that have all the answers and I assure you they do not.  The world is becoming so much harder to live in with high food prices, rent, and health care.  I'm not sure what the answers are but I believe with all the abandoned buildings surely someone can come up with a plan that would get the homeless people off the streets and into a safe environment.  We live in the Northeast and our winters are brutal.  It is not safe to be on the streets when the temps are below zero.  I think I've gone on and on and I'm not sure I'm making sense but this is really how I feel.

I'm not saying it couldn't be worse, Pat_B.

I know many who have much less than I do. Still, one can appreciate what we have, but wonder why are they trying to convince us that we shouldn't look for more, especially for those who just can't seem to get a leg up, whose situations could even be called dire? I worked with people living in the streets, and hope is easy to lose when existing in poverty.

I remember touring Detroit years ago and being astounded by the

number of lovely houses in neglect - empty when so many families were living in what one could term as hovels. It was not long after the huge mayor scandal. Now that people are starting to complain, those little 'accept what you have' messages are showing up more often. It has to make one wonder why, and who is behind the effort to keep poverty happy where it is.

Personally, CCT, I think it's subtle messages being put out there

by the 'HAVES', who don't want people waking up and seeing how much they don't have compared to what the HAVES have been holding back from them for years. If we make them think they should be happy in their poverty, they won't look for more sort of thing. Maybe because I find these messages have increased since people started making noise about how the rich abuse tax sheltering?

Of course nobody with common sense would contradict you. You're

absolutely correct and that "don't worry, be happy no matter what" philosophy often sounds trite and ill-thought-out to one who's hip deep in bad luck, ill health, poverty or other misfortune. But some days I do need to remind myself that it could be a helluva lot worse, and I should just be ready to appreciate better days just in case. Your soap box is working as it should. Be well.

Good afternoon

You have touched on a very big topic that has many elements that are open for debate and a need for solutions. I am 100% behind your thought process on the matter of happiness or the lack of due to going without basic essentials like food, shelter, and medical attention. No person should ever have to starve or live on the streets much less suffer from a debilitating illness or health problem that needs attention. It bothers me to know that this is even an issue in our world. Politicians blow money on so many needless things and ignore the obvious. There are so many abandoned homes that will eventually be torn down that could be repaired and given to those who really need them most.

Probably quotes from really lovable people. Although to stand the test one should

experience poverty and heartbreak and all the other miserable events that most of us

endure without even giving it second thoughts.Although I suppose those who make

the quotes mean well.
