There was a short film on Facebook about a man who constructed an obstacle course just to see if or how the squirrels would get around it to poach at his birdfeeders. He filmed it - it was hilarious, and telling. They are very intelligent, determined little scoundrels. I'll let you know how much (or if) I'm still liking them after I pay the invoice to have them removed from inside my house!

Good evening

I knew that their tails were important to them, I just didn't know how important. We currently have four to five red squirrels and three gray squirrels. On any given day they can be seen feasting and frolicking around my yard. I can almost tell them apart, at least I believe that I can due to their size and behavior. They see me watching them from my kitchen window, and when they do they flick their tail at me or run up the tree until I am out of their sight. They are beautiful little creatures, but a bit persnickety. Regardless, I love watching them hunting for the various nuts and seeds that I put out for them.

Re: Re: Goldiec

Pat, I was just wondering because we only have brown squirrels in our village.  I don't think I've ever seen a red squirrel.

Re: Goldiec

There was no mention of black squirrels, at least I don't remember one. Mostly grays around here, but there are some with rusty or reddish fur.

The grey ones have killed quite a number of red ones so as you can guess the reds are favourite and here they are usually are treated with care. Once saw a woman skinning grey ones presumably they may a squirrel stew. Great how one can learn facts, that would have taken years to assess.

Good Morning

Pat, this post was very interesting to me.  Did they happen to mention black squirrels?  I saw one in a suburb near me.  We don't have any gray squirrels.  We do have lots of brown ones though.  I had no idea how smart they are.  I think they are brilliant to know where they hide their nuts.  I guess once they pick a pantry they save their food for when they are hungry.  It might be hard in the middle of winter when the ground is frozen.  Once Spring arrives they must have a smorgasbord of food to eat.
