Your mom kept her heart despite the hard times of her own life! And her smarts, too!

Good Afternoon
Pat, I loved your post. It reminded me of when we lived on my grandparent's farm. It was on a mountainside and if anyone came to the door after dark my mother answered the door with a shotgun. We never had any problems. Once they heard the gun they left. No questions asked.

Yes, they used to do it here mainly with a chalk mark on the house. My old great Aunt always gave the odd one or two a hunk of bread and cheese. Fortunately, there was a workhouse just up the road and the visitors were always de-fleed.

And in Australia we called them a Swagman. if they had gone fishing instead of travelling the dusty roads and outback areas they could have fed their families or turned their back yards into vegetable gardens they would have survived. Australia was so empty back then. Just a few million about 8 million over such a vast Continent.People have always lived near the coast and the sea then was full of every kind of fish, crustation etc.

Good morning
I have never heard of marking poles to allow others to know where to find food or hospitality. This was a really interesting article. It was kind of her to offer the man some substance and fast thinking on her part to mention a dog and a man.
