Yes, the actual historic people were not nearly as shiny and noble as protrayed either in the book or movie. I look up the histories after reading the novels, just to compare notes!

Cherryh can be challenging to read! Her writing style is very convoluted sometimes. I tried sharing that one with my Dad, and he said, "Can she not write a simple declaratory statement?" That was when I learned that Dad had to work to read, that he actually didn't enjoy recreational reading.

I readd Shogun twice and really enjoyed it. The book bought from Cherryh is Foreigner, 10th anniverar edition. Can't get into it yet? Although I read maybe chapters.

I definitely remember reading Shogun and then later watching the mini-series with Richard Chamberlain. I would do it all again if I had opportunity. Perhaps I can ask Santa Claus for a used book this coming December.
