I had my 'long distance lens' on that morning. He is about 100 to 125 feet away, traveling down a path that I have seen them used before. They were familiar with us, and we - the dogs and me - and I think this was another chance to size us up. He was a healthy animal and very alert. That was something I had to teach my wife. In the forest, we are never alone, and we are not always 'top dog.' There are multiple creatures out there that could take us down should they decide they want or need to do so. 'Ever alert' is the key to survival.
