Pat 1600 Guy tried to blow up the Houses of Parliament. Trying to kill the King. he was caught, hung, drawn and quartered. I suppose it eventually became a commercial event, and then finally, folks had bonfires in their gardens.
This is frowned on now, and most go to a large local bonfire, but the tradition still appears quite strong. Guys associates suffered the same penalty but are never mentioned.
