At the time, I lived in Olympia, WA and we drove down under the ash cloud that day. It was an amazing experience! Stupid, really, but amazing! When something like that happens in my own back yard, I can't just watch it on tv! I still have a jar of that first-day ash. It's like flour, but grey.

Those trees took the straight-on first blast of the eruption, and were simply stripped of leaf and limb in an instant! And in the pictures of Spirit Lake, that grey area is all downed timber, floating in the water.
