There's nothing like living in the country. My little village is called Clark's Station. It had an old railroad station on my property but it was falling down. My current house was a grocery store. There was a barber shop across the road.
Most of the areas here have beautiful Maple, Walnut, and Oak trees. All of our yards have plenty of shade.

Re:
shamasehar, I watched my family live this life when I was growing up. There was so much love in the house that I think everything equaled out in the end. We always had plenty of food, warmth, water, and everything we needed. I never realized there was a lot of work involved because nobody ever said anything. They just did what they had to do. My Mom would help my Grandma can food. My Grandma always took care of the chickens. My Mom took care of the garden when she had time. She was a nurse. My aunts would help cook dinner. My Uncles would work outside doing all the chores. It was a combined effort by everyone.

Re: I love those potbelly stoves.
Sassy, the potbelly stove can keep a family warm in the middle of a very cold winter. I can just picture you and John sitting on the rocking chairs on the front porch. I think you would be drinking a refreshing summer drink and talking about your day

Re: Good afternoon, Pat_B is what gave me the idea about living off the grid.
Sassy, I think if everything goes to hell we will have to find a new way to survive. I think being off the beaten path will be the best way to survive.

It's supposed to go to 88. It rose from the 50s to the 70s quickly this morning. It's 73 now

One can truly understand a way of life only by actually living it...Pat is right, it was a lot of hard work... well a coin has two sides :)
Have a good day.

I love those potbelly stoves.
A cottage with two rocking chairs, that potbelly stove, and a yard surrounded by flowers would be a slice of heaven.

Good afternoon, Pat_B is what gave me the idea about living off the grid.
With the way things are today, it isn't a bad idea at all. It is going to be a hot one, but at least it is still only in the 80s. The 90s is when things get ridiculous.

Of course, what we miss today is contentment, we are living longer but it becomes harder.

Re: Actually it wasn't an easier life - it was physically demanding and chores
Pat, I think if society breaks down this would be the perfect way to live. We would all be self-sufficient and wouldn't have to rely on the powers that be. This is the way my grandparents lived in the '50s and '60s.

Actually it wasn't an easier life - it was physically demanding and chores
could not be ignored just because one was tired or under the weather. Stock had to be fed rain or shine, sleet or snow, the milking had to be done, eggs gathered, wood chopped and stacked in a dry place (or coal carried from the bin to the stove), water was carried, there was no contact with the outside world, news might take six weeks to get there by post. This was how 90% of people lived until the early 20th century, and now most live in towns with -- well, you know how it is now.
