I think she didn't want to admit her marriage was a failure. I think she equated its failure with her being a failure.

Isobel, once her Mother in Law had the upper hand and treated her like a kitchen maid or worse, I am thinking her self esteem and ability to reason things through for what she needed her life to be, became squashed out of her like stuffing from a bear. Then her husband abused her and there was no will in her to fight for happiness and dignity.

Would she have been jumping into the fire from them frying pan or not? I almost wonder. The characters are so believable - but then, since it’s basdd on fact, they would be! lol.

Good morning
Not that Paul would have been the best choice for a married woman, but all of that indecision, unfortunately, cost her her life. Although, nobody could know that a spouse could turn to murder in an instant without some warning signs.
