Re: CCT,

My dad never saw action, but some of the things he learned from the army made him a less than ideal father. The army taught him discipline, but not that self-discipline has to be learned and chosen from the inside, not imposed from the outside. His disciplinarian ways led me to reject all forms of discipline, in fact, and groomed me to distrust all authority.

Sadly most do not want war my Grandfather volunteered. W01. Home on compassionate leave full of lice. The rector called and grumbled at him for not shining his buttons. Of course, the men muddied them a glint in sunshine and bang one was dead from snipers. He had to be dragged back to the railway station and died a few days later. 7 children to feed and no assistance for 6 weeks. Wars are endless and soon forgotten. I expect your father was never the same afterwards.

War occurs everywhere. No argument from me. I see your point entirely.

Thank you for sharing your dad's story. As a military family who has members in all branches of the service, I understand military life. My husband served in two branches. I am not aware of losing any family members while they were serving in wartime, which is shocking considering my great grandfather served in Gettysburg. That was a brutal bloodbath, to put it mildly. Most soldiers do not want to go to war, they are victims of circumstance, and just because they are from another country doesn't lessen their family's pain. All should be remembered who died while serving in one of our world's many wars.

I find for myself with the dilemma of the bombing of Japan a truly Ethical dilemma. There is no definite right or wrong to it. The Japanese people were ready to fight until the last drop of their blood was spilled and thousands more Americans and allied blood would have been spilled. The Bombs killed indiscriminately everyone in those cities and for generations afterwards. America had the way to stop the war in the Pacific and they used it. I cannot say definitely either side was right or wrong.
