Yes, it paid to keep in with them. Although most were harmless. A lower grade for a gipsy, so I was told was a hedge poker. he did not have a caravan, just sheltered under the hedges.

When I was young there was a gipsy camp a couple of fields away from us.

When there well was polluted a donkey fell down it, probably a dog but the said a donkey. They qued up with cans outside our old bungalow and my poor old Mum had to hand them water through the kitchen window. Could not let them all come indoors.
