Re: Sea_Gypsy
I suppose the old country folk watched for these things. Of course, I don't know if it applied in your country. When folk took to emigrating in dubious ships it meant that it was more than hopeless to survive here. Even after the first WW. My father told me that men would congregate at field gates hoping to get a few hours hay-making.

Re: Kabu
Yes, Kabu it was not any fun for the lower classes so called in those days. Some lived off the fat of the land and others were worked to the bone. Actually, The man portrayed left to work in a factory so he could provide more for his wife he was called up and eventually spent several years in a foreign prison camp. He was just skin and bones years later.

Re: Pat
Of course, it was a lot of privilege and cash. I don't think many realise how poor most folk were in the years before WW1. My Uncle gained a scholarship to Oxford College. He was the first to ever achieve that honour. He later taught Doctors at the hospital.

No, they are not abundant as some we have Lime trees up a main street both sides in places. Used to drive the sheep to market up there.

I never heard that saying before. I don't have any oak trees near me either.

That is an interesting old saying. I believe in many of those old tales.

Good Afternoon
Life can be so unfair for so many. I'm a firm believer that everyone should have an education. I love books so much and I want everyone to know how to read.

What a time it was, as Kabu says - and what a whip to the intellect
of the one whose poverty or family obligations kept them from the education they properly deserved. And beyond that - what did the world lose because they were denied that chance?

I agree with Kabu. What a time it was then. I'd never heard that about the Ash and the Oak. Interesting.

So true to reality. Only the privileged could have higher education. it was a way of keeping the poor in their place. Boys from the poor and the Colonies made good fodder for the war machine. They were expendable.
