Good Morning
Pat, I love this story. This reminds me of how my strawberry bomb became the highlight of our birthdays. When my children were little we had everything we needed but there wasn't a lot of extra money. I loved cassata cake but the bakeries charged so much money for them. We couldn't afford to buy a cake from the bakery. Then one day it dawned on me that I could make a cake that was similar to my favorite cake.
I had an idea for the ingredients I wanted to use but I wasn't sure it would resemble a cassata cake. I mixed all the ingredients together and baked my cake. It looked really looked good and smelled good too. I then had to put the topping on my cake. I came up with a topping that used whipped cream, pudding, milk, vanilla, and frozen strawberries. I served it to my family and from that minute forward it became our favorite cake. My grandson actually named my cake The Strawberry Bomb. He requests it for his birthday every year.
One of our traditional cakes came about because I could not afford a store-bought cake. The recipe is priceless.

Lucky were those who had a plot of land and a man who did not need to drown his sorrows but brought a wage into the house. Your story does show how resourceful a woman had to be to create a little treat for the family. Very good Pat.

I loved your post. I was from a big family. My mother spent most of her time cooking for us. We seldom had leftovers from a meal because my brother had "a hollow leg". He always came back to the table at end of meal and finished off anything that had not been eaten.

I love fresh eggs and veggies as described in your story. And it sounds like a wonderful time was had by all. So what if it was Spam or ham? Everyone enjoyed what was served and it's a heck of a lot better than a fancy meal served with no love. Good one.

I love this story. What a brave woman she was; but we improvised, did the best we could when things were tough. Growing up on a farm after WW11 nobody had any money not us, nor neighbors, so no one expected much. Family made us happy.

Happy Easter!
I love this story. You always have the best of them. There is nothing wrong with making do with what you have or can afford, and she certainly put a tasty edge to an otherwise crappy piece of congealed ham product in a can. It might have helped if she would have shaped it like a ham. With her kitchen skills, they might not have noticed. As for eating the chickens that no longer produce, I am thankful that we women don't have that same fate.
