Re: BC-A

The first chapter was.  That's all I've had time for so far.

Like the topic if you think the book's about it.

Yes, the first sentence in a book either catches my attention or not. I might thumb through the book and skim a page or two if undecided. Most pre 1970s books would not be considered good literature because there is no hook in the first few pages.

Re: TAPS - I love this post.. you are an excellent authoress.

Sea-Gypsy, I had the most fun reading your response with all these book lines put together.  It makes me want to do that too, but my mind has stopped working along that line for now.

Re: Good Morning

Mostly I have trouble just getting started.  If I get going, my mind just keeps wheeling and I have to keep it in check or the post gets way too long.

Re: This post is a great thought-starter. First lines ARE a big deal.

I had fun writing this one and thinking of Book first liners.  Ever so often another good one pops into my mind.

Re: FSI

There is so much difference between us in age that when you are famous I no doubt will be long gone.  So, I congratulate you now for the fame that will come.

Re: To me the first sentence of a book or story is everything.

Actually, sassyass, there were two because way back in time a flower was caught between layers of lava and throughout time the flower itself disappeared but the fossil itself when popped open by me had a pair of the same thing.  I found that one in 1965 and long ago gave the matching one away.  My four sons thought that was very special because all they found was bugs and twigs.  Their dad found a few pretty good ones.

Whenever I write anything, I try to go with a grabbing first sentence. It may be the most famous part of whatever the writing is.

To me the first sentence of a book or story is everything.

If that doesn't grab my attention, followed by the first page, I will move on to a different book. Right now I am caught up in "The Bee Keeper's Son." I love Amish love stories. As for that flower, it is a very cool specimen.

This post is a great thought-starter. First lines ARE a big deal.

Your description of your last ride in Ribcage's car is brilliant writing and an emotional hook that could not be written by someone who hasn't lived the whole story. I'm sitting in this virtual classroom taking notes this morning. If the student can advise the teacher, I'd say be sure to include this post in your memoir - don't change a word. Hoping this morning your memories of your son are blessings now.

Good Morning

Taps, I love the way you present your posts.  It made me think of how I write my stories.  I hope you have a good day.  Stay warm!

TAPS - I love this post.. you are an excellent authoress.

Yes, the thought of first lines in books is often swirling in my head. So here are some of the first lines in novels I like, run together: Call me Ishmal and though I once had a farm in Africa those were the best of times, those were the worst of times, even when it was a dark and stormy night I found happy familues are all alike, and that’s why Mrs. Dalliway said she would cut the flowers herself somewhere in La Mancha, and  yes, it was like so but wasn’t - all this happened, more or less.
