Yes, I've heard and seen shows on this but not in this much detail. It's also an old war trick for escaping.

Re: Cleanliness during that time meant a monthly bath.
I believe that water, soap, and a vessel to bathe in were some of their biggest deterrents.

Sassy, I've learned something today. I had no idea this was taking place during the Civil War. Of all the things I learned in school about the war, this was not one of them. As I was reading your article I couldn't help but wonder why the soldiers did not worry about being clean and taking care of themselves. I know they were at war but I would still want to be clean. If I was going to war today I would certainly hope there would be somewhere to brush my teeth at the very least. I wash my hair every day so that would also be something I would want to do and I'm thinking at least a shower once in a while. There is a small possibility that I would not be a good soldier if I wasn't allowed to be clean.
