Good post and it seems how it's taught is important. I took French, a little Spanish, learned a little Latin, and know some Italian and some English. lol But I forgot a lot and can speak none of them well, and here's a secret: they all blend together in my mind so a sentence could be filled with words from any of them unless I think about it. :)

FSI, I had never really thought about this but I can see that you are right. I took three years of French but the third year did not go well at all. To this day I can count to ten in French but that's about it. We never had lectures at our school. I should have taken Spanish. I can remember when we first began classes in French we were all assigned a French name. We kept that name all the way through to the end. My french teacher was never particularly fond of me. I had a friend that took German and she loved it. I never thought I would do good in that class.

Your French teacher was like the Latin Club advisor. My school fired him, so I have a foreign language block.

I was confused enough when I attempted one year of German without the added lecture. I still have no clue as to why I chose German over Spanish. Dumb!
