And there it is: the equation many people make without thinking that poor=bad=shameful.

I remember times like that. Mom somehow always managed to buy some presents.

This is a heart-wrenching tale yet it is heart-warming. Can't wait to read more. Also, my mom would say that there is not shame in being poor; the shame is in being poor in character. Huge difference. Still, one's heart aches for anyone who is made to feel different.

Mary will grow up with a big heart and a place for everyone in it. She will discover that giving and recieving are both blessings. So much easier to give than to receive though when you are growing up.

Her pride was injured and her self-confidence took a hit.

Children have it hard when it comes to fitting in at school. Kids can be cruel. Being poor and ashamed of that status doesn't help matters. Once Mary is older, she may understand her family's situation better. There is no shame in being poor.

Mary is young and does not understand that everyone wants to help families in need.  A giving heart is a wonderful gift and a receiving heart is every bit as important.  Christmas is a time of giving and being thankful.
