My Great-grandfather and his three brothers all fought in the Civil War joining up in Tennessee where they lived.  They joined the Union Army not the Confederacy.  Tennessee was pretty much equally divided between both.  My Great-grandpa was gravely wounded and they thought he would die, but he was brought home in a cart of wounded men and taken care of by his family.  He gradually got well and lived into his seventies.

Re: No, but I have watched Civil War movies, and they did take over homes.

If you were unlucky enough to live where the soldiers were walking, they had no problem asking for a bed, meal, or medical care. I guess that people grew to expect it.

I remember Polish man, he went back to look at his house after the war, He shrugged and said it was a ruin.

Sassy, can you just imagine your house being taken over during the war?  I know there's such a thing as the eminent domain but I wouldn't be happy when they took over.
