They were not designed with modern cars in mind.

Yum!  We always took our groups to a neighborhood in Philadelphia that was packed with hoagie outlets.  I can't remember the district, but the streets were very narrow, and it was almost impossible to turn around...but the sandwiches were worth every bit of the accessability problems.
