I think teachers were quite strict in early days . My Dad said a teacher caned his brother. So his dad visited the school and told the teacher if it happened again he would come and give him a belting. My Dad the same teacher never caned him.

Yes some young men were quite vicious I think they may have been frustrated ,War time blues. Although I once saw a big boy refuse to be caned and was almost fighting the teacher. My Mother said her teacher used to pinch the girls arms, that was sadistic.

I sometimes think there was something to that quote "spare the rod and spoil the child," a time when prizes were awarded only to winners, not to all participants. Geez, I'm beginning to sound like a genuine old fogey.
