I do not believe that they are rougher to students. There is variance like any other school.

I have to say there are good teachers and bad teachers. Some are approachable and others are so standoffish that no one wants to go near them. I'm glad you found a happy medium with your teacher. At least you felt a touch better about him as a teacher. I had some teachers from hell. I never understood what was wrong with them.

Some people just do not do well in a room full of people.
One-on-one is a much easier way to get to the point while engaging in conversation to see where a person stands. People act differently in a crowd than they do when caught alone and unguarded.
