I loved the post and I love the discussion here in the comments. I used to believe that socialism meant communism until I realized just how far apart they are. Communism and Fascism are so far left and right that they meet around the back of the Circle...= pretty much the same. The few have it all. Socialism is all the good things that sharing bring. Health care for all. Affordable pharmacology. Education for all that is the same  standed across the Nation with as much emphasis on hands on skills as technological. Housing for all, I love the idea of tiny  house villages.. Proper sports and other community facilities. Oh on and on.

Re: And thank you Pat, I love hearing all viewpoints.

It does us well to sometimes just sit back and listen to how others feel about a topic that doesn't always have shared perspectives. It is my belief that this is how we learn when we are not entirely sure of a given situation.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: *Was not what.

Of course, the clean air act frowns upon the mines, barge workers, and the steel mills concerning their "dirty air practices." The war with coal is a dirty one, no pun intended. I understand this war all too well, but they are trying to send 55 to 65-year-old men and women to start over in new jobs after they have done this type of work for 30 plus years. For several states...Ohio, West Virginia, Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Pennsylvania, this is not a good thing, but I guess that change has to be implemented eventually. I just wish that we could make it to retirement first.

Re: Re: Re: Re: *Was not what.

I have a lot of empathy for steelworkers and other workers in industries that have moved their plants offshore so they can hire cheaper labor. Our political leaders need to put pressure on the industrialists who do this. When I was studying journalism in the early '80s I did a major story on the impact of closing the mills in Granite City. Laid off steelworkers went from good pay and benefits to looking for jobs at McDonald's just to survive - the unemployment rate then was above 20%. It sucks now, too.

That would make more sense if that was the basis.

Re: Re: That would make more sense if that what the basis.

I live in an area where there are thousands of employed steelworkers, my hubby included, and there is a lot of talk concerning socialism. Greed within our economic system does need to be halted. The government running everything is also not a good thing. From your point of view, I do see both sides. This is why I value different opinions so that I can weigh my options on these topics.

Re: Socialism scares me.

I don't think I quite know what people mean by the word "socialism" these days. I think it's used as a buzz word to imply some kind of revolutionary threat to our way of life. It's a bit misused, like the word "radical" which is often taken to mean wild-eyed and irrational, but when I checked the dictionary it actually meant basic  or foundational.  I believe Bernie Sanders' idea of socialism is that the real power resides in the common people, and the assets of a nation are used to benefit everyone, rather than putting 99% of the wealth into the hands of 1% of the population.

Socialism scares me.

And that will come if the police are defunded. Leaving people to make the choices for who gets punished and how is not a realistic world, and not everyone's minds were created equal, so it could get really intense.
